Ask any adult human being alive today if they have heard of any special significance given to 2012, and almost without exception, they would say “Yes.” All one needs to do is to look around at the current world condition to see the significance of a changing world in 2012. Of course, these changes did not only occur starting in 2012, but have been “brewing” and “set into motion” long before the arrival of 2012. The almost infamous date of December 21, 2012 has been given much attention in recent times. Indeed, the “alarmists” and “fatalists” have often suggested great and impending doom, or at the very least, major world changes that will leave us all with “undesirable consequences.”

In the grand scheme of Creation there must be some kind of self-created karma (good and bad) that sets us up to learn through the consequences of our choices and actions, one lifetime after another. If not, God would seem to be an arbitrary and uncaring Creator to bless or curse us randomly at birth.

Life is in constant flux: people and jobs come and go, we learn new things while forgetting the old, and different events take place. Our lives and views change. A seventeen-year-old boy might believe popularity is of crucial importance, whereas a sixty-seven-year-old man might believe that having a connection with God is what matters most. Nothing stays the same. The only thing we know for sure is that we are, right now.

Last week, I had a home soccer game against an in county rival. Before the game started, one of my athletes from a while back showed up to watch the game. I had a chance to talk with her about what she was doing now, how was college going, don’t you want to put on a uniform and get out here again? As we talked, she conveyed how much she missed high school, and how she wishes she could play for me again. She said that I was different from most coaches.

I am sitting on a wondrous beige couch with which I have been well acquainted for a few years now. But today I am not running a workshop from it. I am deeply sunk into the welcoming cushions (in a posture my grandmother would certainly frown upon) and I am – actually – just sitting. Not working, or talking, or planning, or learning, or thinking, or helping, or earning, or improving, or trying. My attention turns to two monkeys playing in a tree nearby and I watch their antics for a long time, I don’t know how long, till such a point where I am so relaxed that a sudden cough from someone doing their own sitting nearby does not startle me at all.

Jesus Christ has certain basic obligations from everyone who calls himself a Christian. Because we take these rules for granted, people who have not even the read the Bible are able to use hearsay to criticize us. Yet, we tend to agree with them because we do not know better.

Comes a time in most of our lives when we explore who Jesus is; we need and want to know God at this time. But for many this ‘urge’ comes and then goes. What was to be for our eternal blessing never stuck.
