At my age you simply cannot help but look back often and reflect on the lift you have lived thus far and forward to the life you hope to live. I find many others I talk to who are my age, and even quite a bit younger, are doing the same thing. Perhaps it is the result of a recent loss in your family, or a personal illness, or beginning a new chapter of employment.

BY THE TIME we reach a certain age, having invariably learned the hard lesson once too often, we are ready to say to that one who knocks at our door, “I’m okay just as I am, thank you very much!” The same response is applicable also for cold callers in any location; shopping malls, etc.

Answered prayer should be the norm in our lives. God has always responded to the prayers of His people, and He always will. He is not a man that He should lie and He is not the son of man that He should repent. He gives us the invitation to call upon Him, and He assures us that He will answer and show us great and mighty things. (Jeremiah 33:3) We need to understand that God is keenly interested in us. He loves us. And He wants to answer our requests. The question is, “Do we believe that He will?”

Saying “Yes” is about… surrender, guidance, openness, listening and being fully present. So what would you be saying “yes” too? Let’s start with your Divine Life Purpose. Okay… maybe you know what that is and maybe you don’t.

TWO SONS OF OIL (Zechariah 4:14), for those keen on reading the Word of God, are anointed to supply God’s workers and the work of the LORD with the empowering of the Holy Spirit (Hebrew: ruach). Who those two sons are is disputed: some say they are Zerubbabel (the prince of Judah) and Joshua (the high priest), whilst others are adamant it can only be Haggai and Zechariah (himself) – the prophets. Either way, these images of the two sons of oil are of priest, prophet and king – Christ’s famous messianic offices.

The simplest metaphor for discipleship is the cross; a disciple needs to live a cross-shaped life. The cross-shaped life is a well-known metaphor. As we approach the cross, we first look up, and having a vertical focus, which is to God in the heavens, we remember what he has done for us. This breeds gratitude. Then secondarily, as we arrive at the horizontal beam our Lord’s hands were nailed to, we face our relationships, horizontally, with each other, having first been oriented correctly by God’s love through gratitude, vertically.

A great obstacle and hindrance to answered prayer is disobedience to the known will of God. God has a will, plan and purpose for each and every life. That includes yours and mine. His will is revealed by His written Word, and by His Spirit bearing witness within our hearts, leading, guiding and directing us. If we are to fulfill Divine destiny, we will have to learn His leadership and walk in the light of it.

Many of us, I’m sure, were taught the Lord’s Prayer or, “the Our Father” as a means of penitence after the confessional — aimlessly repeating set-piece words without basic instructional insight or understanding as to their non-literal dynamical value. The Lord’s Prayer, when esoterically understood — as intended by its author — is more powerful than the sum of its words. But merely repeating the words isn’t sufficient in bringing about the level of consciousness intended in the prayer.

Fasting is a spiritual discipline used by Christians to humble them before God to experience God’s presence in their lives and to seek God for clarity and direction inn life. My purpose for fasting was threefold; clarity, understanding and direction.

Do you want to become more like Jesus Christ? How many people would dearly love to become more like Jesus Christ, even in some small way, as the days and weeks go by? Is it possible to learn how we might become more like Jesus Christ in all sorts of ways? Yes, it is, but it can be a challenging road at times. Now, I realise that much is said about being generous and giving money in the church and some of it is good and some of it may be not so good. Temptation and corruption are not far from us all at times. Over these many years I have made it a point never to touch the money. I always have two other people deal with the offerings and all financial affairs. Do we not know our own hearts? Generosity brings God’s blessing. Do not be stingy. Now, that is a good Scottish word.

Doubt can rob you of answers to your prayers. What is doubt? It is being double minded in regards to prayer. Prayer must be prayed in faith. You must believe that God is, and that He rewards those who believe Him and seek Him with all of their hearts. God loves when we believe Him. He takes delight when we stand fast on the sure foundation of His Word, regardless of what we may see or feel.
