We’ve been conditioned by the media to believe that more is better. Bigger cars, bigger houses, bigger salaries, bigger vacations, even bigger portions at the drive-through are supposed to guarantee us more happiness. Does having more than the average Joe really multiply our share of peace and joy?

One of the easiest ways to understand a portion of Scripture is to look for repeated words. When the writer refers to something several times within a few verses, he’s trying to emphasize that topic.

What are we to do when we are opposed or persecuted or attacked for our faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Well firstly we are taught that we should not be surprised. The apostle Peter had to write to the persecuted Christians around the year 60A.D. Dear friends, don’t be surprised or shocked when you go through painful trials that are like walking through fire, as though something unusual is happening to you. So we learn that this has been the reality since the church of Jesus Christ was birthed. And, we must not become afraid. Now, that is not easy! When you are under pressure, worship! You can worry or you can worship! Which are you going to do?

Our world is being battered in a manner I have never witnessed being attacked and battered during my entire lifetime! Christians are being persecuted. Islam is seeking to overrun and rule. Terror is arising from the most surprising corners. What have to do? How are we to behave? In which ways must those who have true real faith in Jesus Christ react and respond? Somehow we have to be willing to stand up to certain waves of opposition. We have to learn how to handle harassment, or worse. Some fathers who have belonged to ‘religion’ have said to their children that you have a choice, and it is this. Leave Jesus or leave the family! For over forty years I have been closely involved with those who are persecuted for their faith in Jesus Christ and have had the privilege of meeting some just after they had come out of prison.

Persecution is increasing dramatically and I wonder if any of the political leaders are aware of what is actually happening. Yes, we can be rejected and insulted and mocked and ridiculed and passed over for promotion, but something more serious has arisen in these past few years. What are we to do? Opposition can make me more like Jesus and that may mean we are taken through some of the things Jesus went through. Jesus knew what it was to be lonely, and be misunderstood, and be ridiculed and persecuted, and eventually crucified. But Jesus Christ rose from the dead and Jesus Christ is alive and it is that assurance which has kept me going for over fifty years! If you’re abused and ridiculed and persecuted, because of Jesus Christ, count yourself fortunate. It is the Spirit of God and his glory in you that brought you to the notice of others.
