God’s will for us is to be forgiving so that we can be forgiven ourselves, a powerful and effective spiritual principle, but most of us draw the line at a point beyond which forgiveness of others is unacceptable. If someone in your family has been murdered you may find it too hard to forgive the perpetrator, and others, believers and non-believers alike, will not blame you for your stance. In fact many still call for life sentences and capital punishment for murderers. But how do we Christians marry this with Jesus’ words at the Last Supper: “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26-28. Should we not find it in us to forgive all, not just those we judge to be forgivable?

Two Adverse Perspectives to Abundant Living and How to Avoid Them

There are two perspectives that scripture indicates occur when we fail to realise that within the very nature of true godliness is all the fulfilment of life we could ever desire. I call these two perspectives the ‘Prodigals Perspective’ and the ‘Elder Brothers Perspective’, they come from the parable Jesus told of the prodigal son. The problem that both brothers have is that neither realised ‘there’s a party going on in the Fathers house’. The prodigal believed the party was going on somewhere out there, and he therefore pursued it in a distant land. The older brother lived out his walk with the Father by duty, missing the possibilities and opportunities for abundant living right underneath his nose. Neither asked the Father to give them what the Father actually longed to give them: The feast, the robe and the ring; right here, right now in this life not just in the life to come. Scripture is full of revelation of a God whose passionate desire is that our existence would be enhanced, consider the words of Jesus when He defines the ‘WHY’ behind His mission; “I have come that you may have life and life more abundantly.”
