There is a wonderful scene in Monty Python´s “Life of Brian” where a crowd has gathered outside the house of the mistaken messiah, Brian. Brian comes to the window and tells the crowd they are all free, independent people and should make up their own minds about things. They all chant back in unison “we are free, independent people and should make up our own minds about things.” Collective religiosity is a perversion of fellowship. We gather together for united worship, but not to be clones of one another. From the very moment of creation, free will was an important part of the deal.

Is it possible to follow Jesus and still lead a normal life? When we embark on a faith walk, uppermost in our thoughts is the question of sin, of falling back on old and ruinous ways. For some it may be alcohol, for others a love of money, others a need for malicious gossip; or it could be any of a number of cherished delights which we know in our hearts do us harm and that we find hard to abandon. Where does the motivation come from to keep to a new and godly path?

You soon find yourself believing in Santa Claus, because everything that your parents are telling you, are supported by some pretty dog gone good evidence.

Most people need guidance. Try to think back to your early childhood and think about what your life would’ve been like today, if you didn’t have any guidance or someone to inspire you. It’s not hard to imagine how your life would’ve turned out, with out any guidance or inspiration.

Very few would expect this type of reply to come from the lips of Jesus Christ. Those present on this occasion were taken totally by surprise.

The word “interfaith” is open to many diverse interpretations. And the concept of an “interfaith minister” gives rise to even more confusion. Is this simply a dialogue between some of the major world faiths?; or perhaps it’s a mish-mash of new age ideas that straddle several different religions?
