Here is a man who along with others is enjoying praise and worship in the city of Jerusalem, but of course, this could happen anywhere. The traveller set out in distress or in darkness or in confusion, as if he were coming out of the wilderness and our of barrenness and out of captivity and part of the answer to such deliverance is to be in that setting and situation where you can lift up your hands and where you can sing praises with a serious and sincere and determined heart. The Psalmist would not allow the darkness or depression or gloom to invade him and encompass him. He is determined to climb these slopes and to rise above the very real shade of the valleys. It has been along climb but is not life a long climb and yet there is such help available for all who want it and who look for it and who accept and embrace it. People have travelled from all around Israel and possibly from the surrounding nations too to worship in Jerusalem at the Festival and they have reached the summit and there is that right and healthy sense of arriving in Jerusalem. This Psalm is a Psalm of purest worship and praise. If you are looking for a deeper spirituality and for inspiration these words from the Word of God will be a source of amazing reassurance and blessing. The writer is praising God for all that God has done among His people and during these services in Jerusalem. This week of Feast and Festival is drawing to an end, so what is he going to say? These are parting words, as the time of pilgrimage draws to a close.
